History Timeline Background

Rooted in Mexico

While there are a few competing origin stories, it’s widely believed to have emerged in the mid-20th century as a beer-based, savory hangover cure.

One popular story traces it back to the Club Deportivo Potosino in San Luis Potosí, where a member named Michel Ésper would order his beer with lime, salt, and ice in a chilled glass, calling it “Michel's chelada”—short for Michel's cold beer. Over time, Michelada became the name of the drink, evolving to include hot sauce, Worcestershire, and other savory ingredients.

Originally simple, Micheladas have taken on many regional variations across Mexico and beyond, becoming a spicy, tangy, and highly customizable beer cocktail that’s especially popular in warm climates and at brunch or beach gatherings.
